Distinguished Professor Nan Yao Su

Dr. Nan-Yao Su is recognized internationally as an authority on termites and is known for his innovative approach for their population management. He authored and co-authored over 300 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters on termite biology and control. His studies on the foraging ecology of subterranean termites and chitin synthesis inhibitors led to the development of a baiting system for population control of these cryptic pests. Commercialized as the Sentricon system, it has been marketed in 32 countries since 1995 to protect over seven million homes, and reduced pesticide use by 21,000 metric tons. Dr. Su has served as a technical advisor relating to termite issues for foreign governments such as New Zealand, China, and Vietnam. Some awards and honors include US Secretary of Agriculture's Honor Award, Entomological Society of America (ESA) Urban Entomology Award, Distinguished Alumnus of the Year by the University of Hawaii, ESA Fellow, Medal of Honor of Entomological Foundation, Charter Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors, inductee of Florida Inventors Hall of Fame, and Fellow of AAAS (American Association for Advancement of Science). In 2009, he established the Nan-Yao Su Award for Innovation and Creativity in Entomology of ESA. Dr. Su received his B.Sc. and M.Sc. from Kyoto Institute of Technology, Japan, and his Ph.D. from the University of Hawaii. He joined University of Florida in 1984 and holds the title of Distinguished Professor of Entomology since 2015.

Emeritus Professor Erh-Lieh Hsu

Err-Lieh Hsu is the Emeritus Professor, Department of Entomology, National Taiwan University and Supervisor of Taiwan Environmental Pest Management Association. He received his Ph.D. from the National Taiwan University. Environmental Pest Management Association . He is one of the founding members of the Taiwan Environmental Pest Control Association and has served as the chairman of the board for several sessions ; 1992-1997, 2003-2009, 2012-2018. He has assisted the Environmental Protection Agency in editing and revising several volumes of training materials for vector control professionals. Teaching majors are insect physiology, insect y toxicology, medical entomology and , pest control. Research Expertise are distribution of insecticides in the environment, insecticide resistance, termite control and mosquito control. Professor Houfeng Li

Hou-Feng Li is a Distinguished Professor at the Department of Entomology, National Chung Hsing University, Taiwan. He received his Ph.D. and M.S. degree from the University of Florida, USA and his B.A. degree from the National Taiwan University, Taiwan. His research focuses on termite biology and management. He has published over 70 peer-reviewed papers and book chapters and given over 150 presentations. Hou-Feng received many awards at national and international levels, including the Ta-You Wu Memorial Award (2019) from the Ministry of Science and Technology, Taiwan, and William L. and Ruth D. Nutting Award for outstanding achievements in basic termite biology (2008) from the International Union for the Study of Social Insects. He served as the President (2018-2020) and Secretary-General (2016-2018) of the Taiwan Entomological Society, and the Secretary-General (2016-2020) of the Pacific Rim Termite Research Group.

Dr. Faith Oi

Dr. Faith Oi is the Director of Pest Management University (https://pestmanagementuniversity.org/), an academy that provides state-of-the-art education and hands-on training for the industry. She works at a “grassroots-level” and does applied research to solve industry problems. She has published >250 Extension, refereed and technical journal articles. Led the development of 10 multiday curricula in structural pest management, and has given >350 presentations. She offers a graduate seminar titled Issues in Pest Management. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Florida and her M.S. and B.A. degrees from the University of Hawai’i, Mānoa.

Dr. Menandro Acda

Dr. Shu-Ping Tseng is an Assistant Professor at National Taiwan University, specializing in the fields of invasive species, urban entomology, population genetics, and molecular evolution. She received her Ph.D. in Agricultural Science from Kyoto University in 2020, where she resolved a century-long debate on the native range of Paratrechina longicornis, a widespread invasive ant, and discovered the link between its unique double-clonal reproductive system and its invasive success. Dr. Tseng has published 21 peer-reviewed articles. Her current research focuses on studying the genetics, behavior, and ecology of invasive and urban insects to better understand their success.

Professor Intan Ahmad

Intan Ahmad is a Professor of Entomology in the School of Life Sciences at Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), Indonesia. With a research focus on urban, medical, and industrial Entomology, his expertise includes the study of Aedes aegypti as a dengue vector, vector surveillance systems (including Internet of Things applications), and insect sterile techniques. He also develops effective control methods, such as bait, to manage various urban and industrial pests that develop resistance to insecticides. In his earlier research, Intan was interested in the adaptive significance of behavioral and physiological characteristics of insects and their intersection with behavior, ecology, and physiology. With extensive experience in designing and managing insecticide efficacy tests in urban and laboratory settings, he has also served as an urban pest control/management consultant. Apart from his scientific work, Intan has made significant contributions to higher education, both nationally and internationally. For example, he was the Director General Learning and Students Affairs in the Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education (2015-2018). He received his BS in Biology from Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) in 1982 and his Ph.D. in Entomology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, USA, in 1992. Intan is an author with more than 60 academic publications.

Professor Wu-Chun Tu

As the COVID-19 pandemic is coming to an end, dengue fever, the most widespread mosquito-borne viral disease in the world, has become again a serious issue that the public must face. According to WHO statistics, more than 3.9 billion people in over 129 countries are at risk of contracting dengue, 96 million with symptoms, and an estimated 70% of infections in Asia. As we all know, the two vector mosquitoes that mainly transmit dengue fever are Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus, and Ae. aegypti, which is highly adaptable to the urban environment, is the major vector mosquito species of dengue. In recent years, with the rapid urbanization of human civilization, the rapid growth of the Asian population, and the climate change caused by global warming, the threat of dengue fever is also significantly increasing. However, in the face of such severe challenges, people are actually capable of preventing dengue outbreaks. The main way is the prevention strategy that is based on vector mosquito control, including the establishment of an accurate vector monitoring system and a complete real-time community environmental management system. Since the big dengue outbreak in Taiwan in 2015, this strategy has been used to successfully change the epidemic situation in Taiwan, and there is no longer an outbreak. However, must all prevention work be carried out by the government? Is there any space for the pest control operator industry to participate in this dengue prevention system? We can discuss this possibility at the FAOPMA Pest Summit 2023.

Dr. Theeraphap Chareonviriyaphap

Dr. Theeraphap Chareonviriyaphap is currently a Full Professor at the Department of Entomology, Faculty of Agriculture, Kasetsart University, Bangkok, Thailand. His researches are focused on the blood sucking insects affecting human and livestock. His current works include bionomics of vectors of human and livestock diseases, vector incrimination and vector competence studies; vector behavior in response to insecticides used in control interventions and in response to the use of repellents and candidate botanicals; biochemical mechanisms of insecticide resistance and some works on vector population genetics. One of his major accomplishments is the patenting of the "Excito-Repellency Box" (PATENT N0. 19319 on Excito-Repellency Escape Chamber for Behavioral Test in Mosquito Vectors) which is considered very useful in studying mosquito behavior towards different insecticides used in the disease control programs. Excito-repellency Box test is now considered one of the standard procedures in determining avoidance behavior of mosquito vectors to insecticides. Professor Chien Ming Shih

Prof. Chien-Ming Shih completed his Sc.D. degree from Harvard University in 1993. His current position served as Chairman of M.Sc. Program in Tropical Medicine and Professor of College of Medicine, Kaohsiung Medical University, Taiwan. His major speciality endeavored in vector-borne infections and tropical medicine, and have focused on the etiology, epidemiology, molecular diagnosis, and genetic phylogeny of mosquito- and tick-borne animal/human infections in Taiwan. A standard laboratory for diagnosing tick-borne infections and identifying the collected ticks was also established.

Professor Stephen Doggett

Stephen L. Doggett is the Director of the Department of Medical Entomology, NSW Health Pathology at Westmead Hospital in Sydney, Australia. He has over 37 years’ experience in the field of medical entomology, produced over 780 papers and presented more than 470 lectures at various local and international conferences (having been invited to speak in 23 countries). His research background is broad having published articles on mosquito surveillance, mosquito-borne diseases, mosquito management, ticks and tick-borne diseases, and bed bugs, and has been cited by over 3,370 scientific papers. Stephen is the Chief Editor of ‘Advances in the Biology and Management of Modern Bed Bugs’, ‘A Code of Practice for the Control of Bed Bug Infestations in Australia’, and the former Chief Editor of the FAOPMA Magazine. His field guide ‘Do You Have Bed Bugs?’, has been published in six languages. Stephen is also an internationally awarded insect photographer and holds a sub-7kg UAV (drone) license. In 2012, Stephen was awarded the inaugural ‘Award for Excellence’ for services to the Australian pest management industry, presented by Australian Environmental Pest Managers Association. He was again awarded this honour in 2021, the first dual recipient of the award.

Dr. Mark Gillespie

Mark Gillespie has been with Rentokil Initial since 2004. He has held various senior roles in Finance and Executive Management in his 19 years. Prior to his most recent appointment as Regional Managing Director, Asia & MENAT, he was the Regional Managing Director for the Rest of World region, doubling the size of Rentokil Initial’s presence in that region during his tenure. Professor Christina Liew

Associate Professor Christina Liew is a Medical Entomologist, trained at Imperial College London, London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, and National University of Singapore. Her research interests include mosquito behaviour, insecticide resistance, fogging, repellents, traps, and novel vector control tools. She has managed international partnerships and scientific conferences for the National Environment Agency (NEA)’s WHO Collaborating Centre, and implemented public communications and engagement strategies for Wolbachia technology in Singapore. Currently as Deputy Director for Strategic and Media Communications at NEA, she leads crisis and risk communications for public health issues, including Dengue and COVID-19. She additionally holds adjunct positions at Nanyang Technological University, and has been active in student teaching and mentoring over many years.

Dr. Chin-Gi Huang

Dr. Chin-Gi Huang is a Project Technical Assistant Investigator at the National Health Research Institutes, specializing in mosquito-borne diseases control research. He holds a doctorate in Entomology from National Taiwan University, and a Master's and Bachelor's degree in Biology from Tunghai University in Taiwan. Dr. Huang has a wealth of experience in the field, having previously served as a Postdoctoral Fellow at National Taiwan University, an Adjunct Assistant Professor at Taipei University, and Chief of Division of Surveillance Control at the National Red Imported Fire Ant Control Center. In 2017, he was also a specialist in Vector Mosquito Control at the 29th Summer Universiade.

Dr. Steven Su

Tianyun Steven Su, M.Sc., M.D., Ph.D., is a Chinese-born American Doctor of Medicine, Vector Biologist and Ecologist, and Epidemiologist, who has a broad education in preventive medicine and infection diseases (1979-1984), human parasitology and medical entomology (1984-1987), and vector biology and control (1991-1994). Throughout his career in academia (1987-2002), governments (2002-2021), and industries (2002-present), Steven has been on a productive, achieving and rewarding track for the following areas: outstanding teaching and mentorship for undergraduate and graduate students in parasitology and medical entomology, theoretical and practical research in biorational and sustainable vector and pest control, organization, quality analysis and quality control of vector and pest control entities, research, development and regulation in vector and pest control products, pesticide resistance management in vector and pest control operations, as well as other collaborations among academia, governments and industries at local, domestic and global scales. Since 1987, Steven has functioned as principal investigators for over 50 research projects in vector and pest management from academia and industries, authored over 150 peer-reviewed publications in national and international journals and 8 book chapters, organized and chaired over 30 symposia and workshops, and delivered over 200 presentations at various national and international events. To serve the scientific community, Steven volunteers as a member of editorial board or reviewer for numerous international scientific journals, as well as review committee member of various research funding sources. Steven holds membership or fellowship of numerous prestige professional associations in the USA, Europe, and China, and is recognized by these organizations for his significant contributions.

Professor Kun-Hsien Tsai

Prof. Tsai’s laboratory is a forward-thinking and multidisciplinary team with world-leading expertise in vector-borne diseases, vector ecology, and vector control. We are recognized for our balance in research and practice and for our international collaborative works. (1) Dengue fever. Half of the world’s population is now at risk of dengue according to the World Health Organization (WHO). My research group works on the development of eco-friendly and sustainable measures to control dengue vectors, including biological control methods like copepods, parasitic fungi, and Wolbachia, and physical control methods like short-waved blue light and UVC light, and specific chemical control methods like pyriproxyfen. Students in our laboratory are encouraged to deliver health education to school children and community members. (2) Rickettsioses. Rickettsioses are among the most common neglected vector-borne diseases. Our laboratory actively monitors rickettsial infections in arthropods, wild animal hosts, and humans, resulting in the identification of Rickettsia felis infection, anaplasmosis, and ehrlichiosis in Taiwan. Projects of development of diagnostic tools for scrub typhus using recombinant proteins were carried out by collaborating with the US Navy Medical Research Center. Another project of novel identification technique applying MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry and genomic analysis is being carried out by collaborating with Dr. Pierre-Edouard Fournier of the Research Team 6 of Vectors Tropical and Mediterranean Infections (VITROME) Research Unit, in IHU Mediterranean Infection in Marseille. (3) Vector ecology. Approximately 135 species of mosquitoes have been recorded in Taiwan, but their distribution and vector competence are not updated. Our laboratory systemically survey mosquitoes as well as other vectors, such as ticks, chiggers, and fleas and nuisance arthropods, such as biting midges and bed bugs in Taiwan. The whole genomes of Leptotrombidium deliense and Leptotrombidium scutellare are being sequenced by collaborating with the US Navy Medical Research Center. A project of investigation of the competence of Culex tritaeniorhynchus to transmit yellow fever virus is being carried out by collaborating with Pasteur Institute in Paris. (4) Global health. As an entomologist, I was invited to join the Anti-malaria Mission in the Democratic Republic of Sao-Tome and Principe (DRSTP), West-Central Africa. Our team has successfully reduced malaria incidence to a slide positive rate less than 5%, which has satisfied the WHO criteria of pre-elimination stage, in certain districts by integrated pest management. To further improve health of the residents, our team used our expertise and identified several vector-borne infectious diseases that have never been reported in the nation. After the DRSTP, our laboratory worked on serological studies of dengue fever and scrub typhus with a non-governmental organization in Malawi as well as dengue fever and other vector-borne diseases with Universitas Semarang in Indonesia.

Professor Chow-Yang Lee

Chow-Yang Lee is the Professor and Endowed Presidential Chair in Urban Entomology at the University of California, Riverside, USA. His research involves understanding behavioral, ecological, and physiological adaptations of insect pests in the urban environment. He has published over 270 peer-reviewed papers and books and mentored 16 Ph.D. and 32 M.S students. He is one of the co-editors of the books: Biology and Management of the German Cockroach (2021) and Advances in the Biology and Management of Modern Bed Bugs (2018). Chow-Yang received many awards at international and national levels, including the Recognition Award in Medical, Urban and Veterinary Entomology (2022) from the Entomological Society of America, Arnold Mallis Distinguished Achievement Award in Urban Entomology (2022) from the National Conference on Urban Entomology (USA), 2012 Top Research Scientists Malaysia, Fulbright Scholarship (2002), and the National Young Scientist Award Malaysia (2000).

Professor Hsiu-Hua Pai

Prof. Hsiu-Hua Pai earned her doctoral degree from the Graduate Institute of Medicine at Kaohsiung Medical College in 1993. Currently, she serves as a professor in the Department of Kinesiology, Health, and Leisure Studies at the National University of Kaohsiung, as well as the Director of the Research Center of Humanities and Technology and President of the Taiwan Environmental Pest Management Association. Prof. Pai's major specialty is vector control and health environment, with a current focus on pesticide resistance surveillance and integrated pest management. Furthermore, Prof. Pai's pesticide resistance testing laboratory is the largest and EPA-approved standard institution for the efficacy testing of environmental pesticides in Taiwan. Not only does Prof. Pai manage this laboratory, but she also dedicates her life to educating young researchers and connecting world-famous experts on vector control and environmental health.

Dr. Julie Na

Julie graduated with a Bachelor of Applied Science (Entomology) from Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM). While in USM, she did her research project on urban pest ants' feeding behaviour and their pest status under the mentorship of Prof Lee Chow Yang. Her research resulted in the publication of the first identification key on urban pest ants in Malaysia which became an important turning point for the pest management industry in Southeast Asia on the importance of correct identification in ant management. Julie started her career in Pest Management Servicing Sector about two decades ago and she moved up the corporate ladder from Field Biologist to Senior Technical Manager and Senior Branch Manager. Julie obtained her Malaysian Fumigation License and was accredited as Australia AFAS/AQIS Fumigator, since 2004. She was the appointed Trainer by Peter Meadows Consultancy (Aus) while servicing her previous campany. Being a passionate trainer and advocate of Integrated Pest Management Strategies, she continues to run Technical Pest Management, Bird Proofing and Fumigation Licensing Examination trainings, talks, and consultation for private sectors. Throughout the years, dozens of candidates had successfully obtained their Fumigation Licenses under her guidance.

Dr. Ruide Xue

Dr. Rui-De Xue is the executive director of the Anastasia Mosquito Control District, St. Augustine, Florida, USA and an adjunct professor of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, Miami, Florida. Dr. Xue’s specialty is behavioral ecology and management of mosquitoes and mosquito-borne diseases. He authored and coauthored more than 325 publications. He is the President-Elect of the American Mosquito Control Association (AMCA). Dr. Xue served the Florida Mosquito Control Association (FMCA) as past president and as the past presidents for the Florida Entomological Society (FES) for twice. Also he has served the Society of Vector Ecology (SOVE) as Southeast Regional Director and the Executive Director for the Asian Society of Vector Ecology and Mosquito Control. Dr. Xue received the Medal of Honor (the highest award) from the AMCA and several other awards from AMCA, Special Districts, SOVE, FMCA, and FES.

Professor Dini Miller

Dini M. Miller is a Professor at the Virginia Tech, and the Urban Pest Management Specialist for the state of Virginia. Dr. Miller is an internationally recognized expert in the area of urban pest management, particularly German cockroach and bed bug biology, behavior, and control. She has produced a number of bed bug action plans for the management of infestations in different environments, and has published multiple scientific papers evaluating modern bed bug response to chemical and non-chemical treatments in the field. Her research program currently focuses on the cost and efficacy of assessment-based integrated pest management (APM) methods for structural pest control. Dini Miller received her undergraduate degree from UCLA in 1991 where she majored in Geography/Ecosystems. She completed her Masters (1994) and Ph.D. degrees at the University of Florida (1998) where she studied Urban Entomology, specifically German cockroach biology and aggregation behavior. Dr. Miller has won numerous awards for her work in urban entomology including the pest control industry’s Crown Leadership Award, the Entomological Society of America’s (Eastern Branch) Distinguished Achievement Award in Extension, and the Virginia Pest Management Industry Stewardship Award. Dr. Miller she was named the first “US HUD Healthy Housing HERO\" for her work in public housing, and in 2018 she was presented with the Pi Chi Omega Publication of Professional Services award for her contribution to the first bed bug text book in 50 years \"Advances in the Biology and Management of the Modern Bed Bug\". In 2019, Dr. Miller was inducted into the Pest Management Professional Hall of Fame and in 2020 she received the Southern Region IPM Center award for being a “Friends of IPM-IPM Implementer”.

Professor Michael K. Rust

Professor Rust’s 47-year career as an urban entomologist began at the University of California, Riverside in 1975. Currently, he is semi-retired and holds a special appointment in the Department of Entomology and the Graduate Division. He has authored or co-authored over 180 scientific peer-reviewed and 140 technical papers dealing with urban pest management. Some of the labs current research topics include the interaction of baits and sprays to control German cockroaches and developing attractants and baits for yellowjacket control. Professor Kok-Boon Neoh

Kok-Boon Neoh is Associate Professor of the Department of Entomology, National Chung Hsing University (NCHU). He received his Ph.D. degree from Universiti Sains Malaysia in 2010. He was a postdoctoral research fellow at Kyoto University from 2012-2015 before he joins NCHU. His research primarily focuses on the ecology and pest management of urban pests, including mosquitos, cockroaches, ants and rove beetles. To date, he published 50 peer-reviewed papers.

Dr. Scotty Yang

Dr. Chin-Cheng Scotty Yang currently is an Assistant Professor at Department of Entomology, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, USA. Dr. Yang’s current research is primarily focused on of biological invasion, applied myrmecology and invasive/pest ant management. He has published over 50 peer-reviewed journal articles and more than 80 conference papers. His recent research focus has been centered around topics involving insect-pathogen interactions with a particular emphasis on how viral pathogens interact with the behavior and current management framework of invasive ants. Dr. Yang has vast experience working with and engaging the invasive species regulatory agencies in Taiwan, Japan, and Australia. He is now leading several Department of Agriculture fire ant projects in the state of Virginia, including microbial control, hybrid fire ant identification and early detection & rapid response system.

Dr. Shuping Tseng

Dr. Shu-Ping Tseng is an Assistant Professor at National Taiwan University, specializing in the fields of invasive species, urban entomology, population genetics, and molecular evolution. She received her Ph.D. in Agricultural Science from Kyoto University in 2020, where she resolved a century-long debate on the native range of Paratrechina longicornis, a widespread invasive ant, and discovered the link between its unique double-clonal reproductive system and its invasive success. Dr. Tseng has published 21 peer-reviewed articles. Her current research focuses on studying the genetics, behavior, and ecology of invasive and urban insects to better understand their success.

Dr. Danny Chiman Leong

Dr. Danny Chi-Man Leong is an assistant professor in the Environmental Science program at BNU-HKBU United International College. He is an ecologist, physiologist, and insect taxonomist whose research focuses on the impact of urbanization on wildlife and the ecosystem, as well as the biodiversity that coexists with human beings. He holds a BSc and MPhil in Entomology from National Taiwan University and a Ph.D. in Biological Sciences from the University of Hong Kong. His particular area of interest is ant diversity in urban areas and the effect of urbanization on ecosystem stability. Dr. Leong has extensive experience in scientific research and environmental education. In recognition of his work, he was awarded the National Geographic Emerging Explorer and Guangdong Chimelong Fauna and Flora Protection Award in 2021.

Professor Hasber Salim

Hasber Salim is currently an associate professor at the School of Biological Sciences, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM). Hasber was a senior entomologist with FGV R&D group, one of the key players of the oil palm industry, before he obtained his doctorate in vertebrate pest management from Universiti Putra Malaysia and joined academia. His research interest focuses on sustainable pest management and biological control. In relation to this, he is one of the founding members and the current coordinator of the Barn Owl and Rodent Research Group, USM (http://borg.usm.my). The main goal of the group is the promotion of barn owls as biological control agents against rat pest populations both in agriculture and urban areas. Additionally, Hasber heads the rodent pest laboratory at USM, an independent laboratory conducting efficiency tests and secondary poisoning assessment of rodenticides against rodent pest and non-target organisms. One of his current ongoing projects involves collaborating with several pest control players in Malaysia to develop a smart monitoring using motion sensor and Internet of things to detect the presence and early signs of rat infestation in buildings and premises.

Dr. Lyle Petersen

Lyle R. Petersen, MD, MPH, is the director of the Division of Vector-Borne Diseases (DVBD) in the National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases (NCEZID). DVBD, located in Fort Collins, Colorado, supports CDC’s mission to protect the American public from emerging and endemic bacterial and viral pathogens spread by mosquitoes, ticks, fleas, and other vectors. Dr. Petersen earned his medical degree from the University of California, San Francisco. His career at CDC began in the Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) in 1985. After his EIS training, he joined CDC’s Division of HIV/AIDS where he worked until 1995. During that time, he completed CDC’s Preventive Medicine Residency Program, received a Master of Public Health degree from Emory University, and served in several posts, including the Chief of the HIV Seroepidemiology Branch. In 1996, Dr. Petersen accepted an assignment in Germany where he helped guide that country’s efforts in creating a new national infectious disease epidemiology program at the Robert Koch Institute in Berlin. In 2000, he returned to the United States to serve as the Deputy Director for Science of the DVBD, and he became the division’s Director in 2004. Dr. Petersen also served on the National Security Staff at the White House during the Ebola Response and was the Incident Manager of the Zika Response at CDC.
